The French winger struck two wonder goals after 35 and 54 minutes to turn what had been an even game in Newcastle's favour. Alan Shearer followed up with two quickfire goals in the 4-0 home win.
"After half an hour I was quite impressed with Tottenham," said the amiable Newcastle boss.
"I thought they looked a good side. They matched us yard for yard. I turned around to the bench and said I'd be quite pleased if we could win this game 1-0. There was nothing between the sides.
"Laurent's goal put us 1-0 up at half-time and another stunning strike, a great brace of goals, and suddenly it's a different story.
"In the end it's turned into a good day for us but Tottenham looked good early on. David will be travelling home wondering how he lost 4-0."
Sir Bobby Robson admitted there was nothing between the sides at St James' Park before Laurent Robert's intervention.
