England boss Steve McClaren confirmed this morning that Ferdinand will remained sidelined with the toe injury that has prevented him from training with the squad this week.
That leaves McClaren with three recognised central defenders for the European Championship qualifier at Old Trafford - skipper John Terry, Wes Brown and Michael.
'Daws' is one of five Spurs players in the squad and the only one of the five still to win a full cap, although he has featured in a B international.
McClaren said: "We don't expect Rio to train (on Friday), he is continuing his rehab, he's back running. In this situation with a bruised toe in the beginning there is a lot of pain and then they heal rapidly within two or three days. So we're hoping he gets over it and will be available for Wednesday (v Macedonia).
"There are opportunities for Michael Dawson and Wes Brown to step into that role and we've got every confidence in them to do that."
Michael Dawson could be in line for his first full England cap after Rio Ferdinand was ruled out of Saturday's clash against Andorra.
