One of those games

Under-18 coach Alex Inglethorpe found it hard to put his finger on how his team were eliminated from the FA Youth Cup on Monday.

The lads were knocked out by Portsmouth in the Fourth Round at White Hart Lane through a goal out of nothing just after the hour mark.

Aside from this, we dominated the game and saw a host of chances go begging, a number of efforts go close, and a visiting goalkeeper in outstanding form.

Alex said: "We've all seen these games before, where at the end of it you don't know how you've come out on the wrong end of a defeat.

"We controlled possession and had so many chances, but it was a combination of their goalkeeper being inspired, a lack of real ruthlessness in front of goal, and being caught by a sucker punch.

"If you feel you've been outplayed or you come up against a team that you felt have really put you on the back foot then that's one way to go out.

"But credit to Portsmouth because they made it hard for us, put a lot of men behind the ball, defended well and, as I say, their keeper was inspired."

Pacy right-winger Ryan Fredericks caused the visitors problems throughout but was denied on a couple of occasions by Pompey keeper Liam O'Brien, as were Paul-Jose M'Poku and Tom Carroll as we bombarded our South Coast opponents.

Late efforts from Kudus Oyenuga and Dean Parrett also missed the target by inches, leaving Alex to lament.

The coach added: "The players are frustrated at having that many opportunities yet not being able to force a goal.

"We've scored a lot of goals this season, so we're not a team that's goal-shy because we've been scoring in fours, fives and sixes. But this was just one of those games where we couldn't force the goal in.

"You can't blame anyone for attempting anything out of the ordinary or trying to walk the ball in. So many good crosses came in that we either couldn't get on the end of, we'd get on the end of but their keeper would make a save, or we'd uncharacteristically miss the target. We had more than enough chances to win two games."

Highlights from this game are now available on Spurs TV Online on the Reserve & Youth channel.
