The Tottenham Hotspur SF Racing Team made a fantastic start to the first-ever round of the Superleague Formula Championship at Donington Park on Sunday.
Duncan Tappy steered the car home to third place and a podium finish in race one on Sunday morning before claiming fifth place in race two in wet conditions in the afternoon for an overall joint-second place in the championship.
We qualified in eighth place on Saturday after Duncan's quickest lap saw him grab a place in the top four of qualifying Group B. The qualifying session then took the form of a shoot-out between the top four teams of Group A and B. We were drawn against Sevilla in the quarter-final and lost out by the narrowest of margins for that eighth place on the grid.
Duncan faced initial pressure from Olympiacos and later from PSV but held onto third place in round one. Beijing Guoan took the chequered flag with AS Roma second.
Starting positions were reversed for race two - the team in pole position in race one, Beijing, started 20th - so Duncan started from 13th on the grid.
This race was taken by Sevilla's Borja Garcia, who started seventh on the grid, from Tuka Rocha of Flamengo (Brazil) and Liverpool's Adrian Valles. Beijing made it up to sixth behind Duncan to take the overall lead.
Duncan said: "It was a great feeling to get up on the podium. It is a bit of a fairytale at the moment and great to represent Tottenham Hotspur and hopefully this will be the first of many podiums."
Here is the points tally after round one - Beijing 79, SPURS, Liverpool 72, Sevilla 68, AS Roma 63, PSV 59, Flamengo 52, FC Basel 46, FC Porto 46, Borussia Dortmund 44, Al Ain 37, Rangers 33, Olympiacos 30, Corinthians 30, Galatasaray 24, Anderlecht 17, AC Milan 6.
The next round of the Superleague Championship is at Germany's famous Nurburgring on the weekend of September 20/21.
