October 30: Boro beaten, ton up

Posted on 30 October 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

I was very proud of our performance against Middlesbrough because it was a tough game and to come from behind like that shows plenty of character.

We won three games in a row before Saturday, at Newcastle, a very difficult game, but everyone thought this would be an easy game. Of course, we knew differently.

We had a first half where we knew we could do things a little better but you can see there that we wanted to win and worked to win but perhaps not hard enough.

In the second half we believed that we could change the game and to have that belief to come from 1-0 down against Middlesbrough, a team that plays from the defence with nine men behind the ball, that showed character.

We had a sloppy start, especially the first 15, 20 minutes. That happens. The second half told everyone how strong we are and that we can play football, especially if you are 1-0 down against a team that defends deep and make it difficult.

We are now seventh in the Premier League and if you see the whole season you know we deserved to be there.

We have worked hard to be there. The Premier League is always honest. If you play well and didn't deserve to lose there will soon be a game where perhaps you win and maybe you've had a little luck.

I think we've only really had one bad game, against Blackburn, and we could have drawn that. To win three games in a row in the Premier League, that is strong.

I was told on Saturday that I have now played 100 games for Tottenham. I've been here over two and a half years and I am very proud that I came back from my bad injury in 1996 to play 100 games in English football. I'm also proud to play for Tottenham.

I can remember my debut at Hillsborough. I came in from Germany late in the week and just about went straight into the team on the Saturday!

I've enjoyed my time in the Premier League. It is a style of football I like to play and I love the passion of games and the crowd. This is my football.

We are improving and this way is the right way. We stick together at the club from everyone one here at White Hart Lane to the players and that is the right way. That lets everyone know how important thaey are for the success of the club.
