We are saddened to announce the passing of our former Trainee Che Roberts who passed away on May 11, aged 38.

A full back, Che made 81 competitive appearances for our reserve and youth teams between 1985 and 1988, helping our senior youth side to consecutive South East Counties League titles in 1986-87 and 1987-88.

Born at Edmonton on March 17, 1970, Che attended Alma and Albany Comprehensive Schools and represented Enfield District and Middlesex County schoolboys.

Associated with Enfield Rangers from the age of eight, he signed South East Counties League forms for us on August 9, 1985 and made his debut in our Junior division two team eight days later against Crystal Palace at Mitcham.

A further five appearances followed at the end of that season before joining our full time staff as a Trainee during July, 1986. Others from that intake included future first team players Guy Butters, Kevin Dearden, Andy Polston and Brian Statham.

Che featured for both our youth and junior teams during 1986-87, stepping up for his Youth team debut at Watford on November 15. He gained a winners medal at the Dusseldorf international tournament during April, 1987 when we defeated the Russian national team on penalties in the final.

Watford were also the opponents when Che made the first of eight appearances in our Football Combination reserve team, on September 12, 1987. He also featured in our run to the semi finals of the FA Youth Cup later that season and was a member of our South East Counties League Cup winning side who defeated Southampton in the final.

Che returned to play for Enfield Rangers after leaving us in 1988 and turned out for St. Margaretsbury until a knee injury ended his playing career. He worked for a firm of accountants in the City of London for a number of years and lived at Epping with his girlfriend Suzanne.

Che passed away in hospital following a short illness. He is survived by his parents, Terry and Barbara, and daughter Chloe.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

A funeral service will be held at 11am at Enfield Crematorium on Tuesday, May 20. No flowers please, but donations may be made to East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices or c/o funeral directors DC Poulton & Sons, Clarks Lane, Epping, CM16 4NJ.
