Nielsen stars as Legends beat Danes

Allan Nielsen showed he still has plenty of ability as the Spurs Legends and their Danish opponents HOG Oldboys locked horns on Sunday afternoon.

Our former midfielder and League Cup matchwinner at Wembley in 1999 looked very useful in the middle of the park in what was a close contest until mid-way through the second half. Spurs Legends eventually ran out 6-3 winners.

Nielsen played the first half for Totttenham alongside the likes of Clive Wilson, Mark Falco, Garry Brooke and Tony Galvin, before swapping shirts and playing for the visitors in the second half.

Having enjoyed the first team’s 3-2 victory over Stoke City the previous afternoon, the Danish visitors arrived at Ware FC by coach, determined to show what they can do in the glorious Hertfordshire sunshine.

But they found the ex-White Hart Lane favourites in fine form, with Brooke forcing an early save from the visiting goalkeeper.

The deadlock was broken on the half-hour mark when Nielsen’s low cross from the right was touched on by Wilson for Falco to fire home.

Martin Bille equalised with a long-range effort that went in off the underside of the bar, but a neat finish from Wilson saw Spurs go into the half-time break 2-1 up.

Jesper Olesen made it all square shortly after the restart, before a James Bunn through ball found Micky Jarrett who fired in to make it 3-2 mid-way through the second period.

Substitute David Howells then added another for Spurs from the penalty spot after Trevor Wilkinson was brought down in the area, before Dave McDonald’s low shot made it 5-2.

By the time Wilkinson netted on 85 minutes it was well and truly game over, but there was still time for HOG Oldboys to hit the target again when Nielsen, having switched sides, set up Jacob Hansen to score from close range.

Spurs Legends: Tony Faulkner, Dave McDonald, Tony Galvin, Stuart Nethercott, John Lacy, Garry Brooke, Allan Nielsen, Mark Stimson, Andy Edmunds, Clive Wilson, Mark Falco. Subs used: James Bunn, Trevor Wilkinson, Micky Jarrett, David Howells.
