Les Ferdinand

Tottenham striker Les Ferdinand returns to his old stomping ground on Sunday, looking to score in his third consecutive Premiership game at a club where he was such a popular figure during his two-year spell in the northeast.

Ferdinand's partnership with Alan Shearer amassed 49 goals between them as Newcastle twice came runners-up to Manchester United in the late 1990s. An indication that Ferdinand was held in such high esteem was that the Magpie supporters were the first set of fans to christen him 'Sir Les'.

However the St James' Park faithful will be hoping that Ferdinand left his shooting boots behind in north London on Sunday as their team seek to close the gap on leaders Leeds United at the top of the Premiership table.

Shearer's return to the team after injury has certainly boosted the side and his partnership with Craig Bellamy is a perfect mixture of power and pace that will cause a lot of problems for the Spurs defence on Sunday afternoon.

The Newcastle skipper has converted a fifth of his efforts in the Premiership this season but after the dubious goal panel ruled his 'strike' against Manchester United as a Wes Brown own goal, Shearer has yet to score one in front of his home crowd.

And if you think that may change with him netting the first goal of the game on Sunday, then an 5/1 flutter with online bookies spursbet.co.uk may be in order. Shearer can also boast a more impressive shooting accuracy than his former partner with 47% of his efforts hitting the target compared to 40% from Ferdinand.

However the Spurs man has got eight shots on target this term - one more than Shearer. Furthermore he has scored three times against Newcastle since his £6 million departure in July 1997.

Also he is keeping Spurs' record signing Sergei Rebrov out of the team with his commanding displays this season. Feeding on some great service from Teddy Sheringham, Ferdinand has prospered at White Hart Lane in recent months after spending large parts of his time at Spurs on the sidelines.

But with Shearer, also having two assists to his name in the Magpies' 4-0 win at Bolton last weekend, you would fancy the Newcastle striker to help his side to a vital home win.
