Basketball great Steve Nash admits he's 'gutted' to miss his beloved Spurs playing on his doorstep in New York.
The NBA's two-time MVP is instead on a plane to China where he is raising funds with Chinese basketball legend Yao Ming.
The pair did the same in 2007 and raised a staggering 2.5million dollars mainly for the Project Hope charity, which builds schools in the poorer areas of China.
It means he will miss us opening the Barclays New York Challenge against the New York Red Bulls tonight and Sunday's clash against Sporting Lisbon.
"I live in New York in the summer for at least a month or two and this year it just falls that my last day here is today (Thursday)," he told us on Thursday morning.
"I'm going to meet Yao Ming in Beijing. It's a great event and the second we've done together. The last time we raised two and a half million dollars. It just happens that I'm leaving at 5pm tonight (New York time) and that means I get there just an hour before the gala dinner.
"I've left it to the last minute but I still can't make the match. I'm gutted!"
It means Steve - whose father John lived in the Tottenham area and was a Lane regular - will miss our showdown between his friend and latest NY Red Bulls recruit, Thierry Henry.
"Yes, he's given me quite a bit of stick over the years," said Steve. "I know deep down inside he has a respect for Spurs fans and loved the rivalry.
"It's a great signing for Red Bulls and for the MLS, massive for the game here. He's still got it."
