My 'unbelievable' defence - Gomes

Heurelho Gomes feels our fine defensive form can be best summed-up by arguably the most important few seconds of action in our 2-0 win at Blackburn on Saturday.

We were 1-0 up and in a real scrap at Ewood Park when Rovers carved out their best chance eight minutes into the second half.

Vince Grella clipped a cross in that just evaded Michael Dawson's leap and found striker Benni McCarthy. He chested it down and was presented with a clear strike at goal just six yards out. His low shot clipped off Gomes' legs, hit the inside of the post and rolled across the goal where Sebastien Bassong won the race against Franco Di Santo to clear, denying the Rovers man a certain equaliser.

Goalkeeper Gomes made a couple of fine saves - showing clean hands in difficult conditions - as we soaked up the pressure before Peter Crouch secured maximum points with his second goal of the game seven minutes from time.

It meant six points and successive clean sheets in the space of four days after the disappointment of losing at home to Wolves last weekend.

Asked to describe the form of his defence Gomes, full of smiles in the visitors changing room at Ewood Park, simply said: "They are unbelievable.

"They give me so much confidence," he continued. "They work so hard. Michael Dawson is an unbelievable player, Benoit on the left, Charlie on the right, Sebastien Bassong, they are in such good form at the moment.

"I made a couple of important saves, I helped my team and I'm happy with that. That's all that matters. I want to help the team win points. Sometimes the team needs me and I have to be ready to make a save, like I did today.

"This was a big win for us - it's been a great reaction to Wolves."

As for that key moment at 1-0, Gomes added: "I touched the ball, it hit the post and Sebastien was there to clear. Perhaps some players wouldn't be ready for that and the striker would score easily, but our defence has that full concentration all the time. It's so important for us.

"We've had two clean sheets in a week and that's great for us. We will enjoy this win today and Sunday but then Monday we start all over again and prepare for Fulham."
