Mums Matter celebrated at SOS Village

Posted on 13 April 2012  - 08:43

We have taken the Celebrate 4 Mum competition out to where it matters most – amongst the thousands of orphaned and abandoned children in SOS Villages around the world.

Mums Matter celebrated at SOS Village

Our South African club partners, Supersport United, visited the SOS Village in Rustenburg, where our Tottenham Hotspur orphan house is based.

They set children at the Village the same challenge as we have set our fans in support of SOS Children’s ‘Mums Matter’ campaign – what goal celebration would you do for your Mum if she was in the crowd?

Did you know there are more than 5,250 SOS mothers who care for 78,000 children in 518 SOS Children's Villages?

By donating whatever you can to Mums Matter today, you can help SOS Children provide a Mum for more orphaned and abandoned children around the world.

SOS Children, the world’s largest orphan charity, has been the Tottenham Hotspur’s international charity partner since 2007.

As part of the relationship, the Club has financed the construction of the Tottenham Hotspur orphan house in Rustenburg, which is uniquely funded by monies received from players' fines.

SOS Children's Village in Rustenburg opened in 2006 in North West Province. The SOS Village is one of the first SOS 'SMI' Villages - Solid Integrated Model - which means, unlike other Villages, the houses are integrated into an existing community estate.

Children from the Rustenburg village were invited as guests of the Club to the final game of our pre-season tour of South Africa in 2011, the Vodacom Challenge Final against the Orlando Pirates. The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has also visited the village in Rustenburg as part of its community programme.

Since 2010, the entire first team have all sponsored an SOS orphan from around the world. Michael Dawson had the pleasure of personally meeting the child he sponsors, Aubrey, during England’s 2010 World Cup campaign in South Africa, before a second meeting the following summer during the 2011 Vodacom Challenge.

The huge benefit of SOS Children's approach is that the children enjoy a normal childhood in a loving, supportive environment made possible by this extraordinary organisation with which your Club is proud to be associated.

Celebrate 4 Mum!

Follow the lead of children at the SOS Village and send us videos of your own goal celebrations.

The prize at stake? The match ball from our game with Blackburn on 29th April, signed by the team!

You can now e-mail your videos to us at
For those of you on Twitter and Facebook, you can put your video online and post the link on or Tweet it @SpursOfficial, as long as you reference #celebrate4mum.

If we like it, we’ll show it on the big screens at half-time during the Blackburn game!
Then it’s up to the fans in the ground that day - if your video gets the loudest cheer, we’ll contact you and that signed match ball will be on its way to you!
