Grant Hall and Alex Pritchard both started as League One side Swindon Town played host to 2013 Europa League champions and 2012 Champions League winners Chelsea in the Third Round of the knockout competition.
Grant had a hectic night, being tested to the full over 90 minutes against a side that included the likes of Fernando Torres and Juan Mata, while at the other end Alex put himself about well, in particular testing Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with a good strike on what was the 40-year-old keeper’s Blues debut.
But in the end, despite a solid performance from the hosts, Jose Mourinho’s men showed their power as they won through to the next round with a 2-0 win, Ramires adding to Torres’ goal in the first half to get the job done.
Our third loanee at Swindon, Ryan Mason, unfortunately missed the game through injury.
Elsewhere in the competition, Jake Livermore and Adam Smith maintained watching briefs from the bench as Jake’s Hull City saw off Huddersfield 1-0, and Adam’s Derby County slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Leicester.
It’s also League Cup week in Portugal, and Cristian Ceballos will be hoping to see some game time tonight (Wednesday, September 25) as his FC Arouca side takes on Beira-Mar.
In regular La Liga action in Spain, meanwhile, Yago Falque’s Rayo Vallecano travel to Sevilla this evening.
