Mido joins debut greats

Posted on 9 February 2005  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Mido joined some of the club's greats by scoring twice on his debut - Club Historian Andy Porter gives us the rundown on those dream debuts...

The Egyptian international became the first Spur to score two goals on his league debut in our colours since Chris Waddle, who netted twice in a 4-0 home win against Watford on August 17, 1985.

Twelve months earlier, current development coach Clive Allen did likewise — again on the opening day of the season — notching two of our goals in a 4-1 victory at Everton on August 25, 1984.

Colin Lee holds the club record having scored four goals in the 9-0 second division rout of Bristol Rovers on October 22, 1977.

Prior to that, the record was shared by Charlie Wilson and Jimmy Greaves who each bagged a hat-trick. Wilson did so at South Shields on September 20, 1919 and Greaves at home to Blackpool on December 16, 1961.

Others to net twice on their league debut for us are:
Vivian Woodward v Wolverhampton Wanderers (h) 01.09.08
Jimmy Bauchop v Sheffield United (a) 01.09.13
Harry Sparrow v Oldham Athletic (h) 17.01.14
‘Chip’ Chipperfield v Coventry City (a) 30.08.19
Bill Roberts v Oldham Athletic (h) 25.08.28
Willie Evans v Swansea Town (h) 07.11.31
Almer Hall v Grimsby Town (h) 26.12.34
Johnny Jordan v Sheffield Wednesday (h) 30.08.47
Vic Groves v Liverpool (h) 15.09.52
Terry Medwin v Preston North End (a) 18.08.56
Eddie Clayton v Everton (a) 05.04.58

Three members of our current squad - Dean Richards, Frederic Kanoute and Jermain Defoe - are amongst the 55 players who have scored one goal on their league debut for us since we joined the Football League in 1908.
