Stoke 1-2 Spurs - Mauricio's reaction

Sat 07 April 2018, 21:00|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino once again spoke about the character and personality of the players after we were pushed all the way in a 2-1 win at Stoke on Saturday.

Christian Eriksen was credited with both goals - although Harry Kane also claimed the second - as we held off a spirited Stoke side to make it six wins on the trot and 14 matches unbeaten in the Premier League - equalling a Club best in the PL era.

We were in control of a first half with few chances and looked ready to push on when Christian drilled home the opener on 52 minutes.

That didn’t materialise as Stoke levelled five minutes later but we were soon in front again as Christian’s free-kick flew home, with Harry claiming the slightest touch on the way in.

The game opened up after that and both teams had chances on the break, while Xherdan Shaqiri rattled the crossbar with a free-kick.

"It was so, so difficult and the team competed well,” sad Mauricio. “It was a game we deserved to win.

“In the first half we created some chances but we weren’t capable of scoring. In the second half we scored and then we made a mistake, disappointed with the goal we conceded but we came back.

“In the last 10 minutes we suffered a lot but the character and the personality that the team showed today was fantastic to achieve the three points.”

On our form…
Mauricio: “We’re in very good form but it’s step by step. Now the next game is Manchester City. The objective is to win points, push hard and build on our position in the table.”

On making four changes at Stoke…
Mauricio: “The team is doing well, I trust in the squad and the players are working hard to fight for positions in the starting 11. That makes our decisions very difficult. In the end, it’s a collective win, good for different players who played again and for them to feel that competition again is so important.”

On the second goal…
Mauricio: “Harry said to me 'I touched it'. If he said he touched it, he touched it! It's good - one for Christian, one for Harry is fantastic.”
