First to the business of the day and a fast start paved the way for a fantastic 4-1 win against Liverpool in the Premier League as goals from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son put us 2-0 up inside 12 minutes.
Liverpool responded for 2-1 but we restored our two-goal advantage when Dele Alli volleyed home seconds before half-time. Harry added his second for 4-1 10 minutes into the second half and then Hugo Lloris took over with three fine saves to maintain that scoreline.
It was witnessed by a crowd of 80,827 at Wembley - a record attendance for the Premier League (beating United’s 76,098 against Blackburn in March, 2007), a Club record home attendance in the league (beating the 73,587 against Chelsea in August) and our third highest attendance of all-time (behind Bayer Leverkusen 85,512 and Monaco 85,011 last season).
Throw into the mix meeting all-time Argentina and world legend Diego Maradona before the game and then NBA great Kobe Bryant afterwards, and you can picture Mauricio’s wide smile in the tunnel area.
“Today was a day to enjoy,” said Mauricio. “At the beginning I met Diego Maradona, the best player ever, then the performance, our fans, then Kobe Bryant - there are so many emotions this afternoon. It’s impossible to get better than this!”
Mauricio gave full praise to the players as they extended our current run to seven matches unbeaten in the Premier League and four wins on the trot.
“It was an unbelievable performance, I’m very pleased and I’d like to congratulate our players for a fantastic effort,” added Mauricio.
“I’d like to thank our fans again, 80,000 fans helping us and it’s so good because the result will help give us the confidence we need for the rest of the season. We start to feel Wembley can be our home.
“I’m so happy with our players, their effort is fantastic. We demand a lot and they are pushing, working so hard and they deserve the credit because they deliver the job on the pitch.
“We have to keep going now. We have so many important games ahead, next a massive game against West Ham that we want to win. We want to win every game.”
We take on West Ham in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium, connected by EE, on Wednesday.
