A tough afternoon in the Premier League at Wembley was settled by Heung-Min Son’s sublime winner in the second half.
‘Sonny’ curled home from 20 yards on 64 minutes to secure the points in a close encounter with clear-cut chances at a premium. That goal made him the highest scoring South Korean in Premier League history on 20 goals, taking him past United legend Ji-Sung Park.
It was a key win with Toby Alderweireld, Dele Alli and goalkeepers Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm all out injured. Paulo Gazzaniga stepped in for his Spurs debut and made a number of fine saves.
“The win was so important, a massive three points for us,” said Mauricio. “We can talk about different things but after a few difficult circumstances the answer was fantastic from the squad.
“That pleased me the most, because it’s about the squad and today the squad was amazing. We won the because of the squad.”
After beating holders Real Madrid so impressively in the Champions League on Wednesday night, the importance of this win cannot be underestimated.
“When you play a game like Real Madrid there is always danger, you have to be focused and the performance was so professional from the team,” added Mauricio.
“Maybe it wasn’t our best performance but I’m so happy because it was a difficult game, difficult to play against a team that is playing well and needs the points. It’s a fantastic three points for us.”
