The manager is never one to look back and that’s the message again this week. Indeed, it will continue to be the message as we bounce from one big game the next - Real Madrid to Liverpool to West Ham to United and then back to Real Madrid again, all by November 1.
“In football, you cannot stop,” said Mauricio after training on Friday. “You are always looking ahead and that’s the mentality we want.
“It’s true it was a good performance and result for us against Real Madrid in the Champions League but now it’s the Premier League and we want to be there fighting for the top position, so the three points is important.
“We must go step by step. We can’t look too far ahead, the next game is Liverpool then West Ham then Manchester United. For now, we’re focusing on Liverpool.”
Jurgen Klopp’s men certainly carry an attacking threat, underlined again by a seven-goal show against Maribor in the Champions League this week. They’ve lost just once in the Premier League but drawn four of their eight matches so far.
“Liverpool have a great team, a great manager, a lot of quality up front and they can score so it’s important to be fresh and to be aware,” added Mauricio. “In both phases of the game, in and out of possession, we need to be focused.
“It’s always tough to play against Liverpool but we’ll keep going, keep fighting and try to win every game. That’s our mentality.”
