Matty misses out

Posted on 25 May 2001  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Matthew Etherington suffered international heartbreak on Thursday - as our injury curse struck again.

The young winger was called into Howard Wilkinson’s England Under-21 squad last week for the friendly against Mexico, played at Filbert Street, a training camp in La Manga and onto Greece for a European Championship qualifier.

But the 19-year-old had to withdraw after feeling increased pain from a foot injury sustained against Manchester United last weekend.

It was a huge blow for Matty who it looks certain would have won his first England U21 cap after boss Howard Wilkinson gave every outfield player named in the team sheet a run out.

A despondent Matt revealed: "I picked up the problem on Saturday. It wasn’t much of a problem then, the adrenaline kept me going and I didn’t really feel it.

"But I went out for a meal on Sunday night and started to feel my foot throbbing more and more and thought ‘something’s up here’.

"I went to see a specialist on Monday, had a scan and that showed I had damaged ligaments on the top of my left foot.

"I had to pull out of the England squad which was a bit of a blow, especially after seeing most of the players get on against Mexico.

"I’m back in treatment at Spurs Lodge for a week and as long as I rest it, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. I suppose it’s one of those things."
