Sunday’s excellent performance and result here against Liverpool was certainly a boost to everyone — including all our supporters who again did a magnificent job in getting behind the players.
However, we now have it all to do again and we must match that effort and endeavour against Leicester City this afternoon. It is important to us that we maintain our unbeaten home record in the Premiership but we are acutely aware that City will present us with a severe test.
One of the most encouraging aspects of Sunday’s triumph was the form shown by debutant Alton Thelwell and Ledley King who is gradually building on his experience at this level. Ledley looked composed throughout against an international midfield and showed in his confidence and distribution that he is more than just a defender.
I am convinced that there is much more to come from Ledley and from Alton who faced a difficult home start but came through it superbly. He is a versatile and mature performer and again one very much for the future.
Another success was Stephen Clemence in that left wing-back role. It was all very new to Stephen but he adapted well and set up both our goals with astute crosses.
With Stephen Carr and Luke Young also home-grown products, their presence illustrates just how promising our future is. Indeed, they are our future and I am encouraged that there are others waiting in the wings to seize their own chance.
It may take some years for that youth production line to finally bring on consistent dividends because these rough diamonds need to be polished into the finished article. But we are doing all that is needed and certainly heading in the right direction.
They are very much the next generation and those of you who regularly watch our Academy games at Spurs Lodge will be aware of the potential we have at that level. There are a lot of people working hard behind the scenes here to find and help these youngsters and it’s particularly encouraging for them when their prodigies reach the senior side.
You need a balance in any side, bringing in specialists in particular positions to complete the jigsaw. But you must always build from within and, to my mind, the more players that you can bring through the ranks the better they serve your cause because they represent the heartbeat of the Club.
As I say, we again showed great reserves of commitment against Liverpool. Leicester always deserve similar respect — and will certainly receive it. We won’t get anything today without working for it but we’re always prepared for that challenge because that’s the essence of the Premier League.
Meanwhile, don’t ever underestimate the value of your own contribution. Your support is both valued and needed so get behind the lads and we’ll do it together.
