That precious point for Boro secured seventh place in the Barclays Premiership and the final qualifying spot for the UEFA Cup.
This goalless draw, our first at home since September, meant we finished ninth.
Our target was explained time and again in the lead up to the match - hope City win by the odd goal and win by two more - but it was always going to be a tough ask against Rovers, who, as expected, competed for everything.
Martin Jol made two changes to the side that lost at Middlesbrough last week with Noureddine Naybet back in defence for the injured Michael Dawson and Robbie Keane in for Jermain Defoe.
There was little to choose between the sides in the first half.
Both keepers were forced into action and while Brad Friedel was busier, Radek Cerny made the save of the half to deny Andy Todd from close range. Cerny was also thankful for a couple of point-blank blocks from Ledley King and Erik Edman.
Keane's volley after just six minutes was too hot to handle for Friedel and he had Ryan Nelson to thank for nicking the rebound off Fredi Kanoute's toe in front of goal.
Cerny's moment arrived after 14 minutes.Aaron Mokoena flicked on Morten Gamst Pedersen's corner for Todd to strike full on the volley from 10 yards but Cerny scrambled across his goal and somehow deflected the effort over.
As play switched frome end to end, Friedel turned Simon Davies' low shot aside and Edman blocked Brett Emerton from close range. From the corner, David Thompson somehow failed to connect with a header just a matter of yards out at the far post.
Kanoute, again linking play well, spun and shot straight at Friedel after 25 minutes but Rovers, tidy in possession, were always dangerous on the counter and King did superbly to block Jon Stead in front of goal.
We finished the half with a one-touch move from end to end that started with Cerny, Edman, through to Sean Davis via Michael Carrick only for Friedel to palm out Davis' fierce strike.
The second half didn't have quite the same bite as the quest for Europe became harder and harder.
Chances were at a premium and we went close twice - Naybet prodded Andy Reid's free-kick wide from close range while lovely skills in the area from Keane opened up a shooting chance that curled just wide.
In-between, Rovers were happy to try their luck from distance with Emerton, Stead and Thompson all hitting the target without causing Cerny a problem.
The arrival of substitutes broke the game up further as both sides appeared to accept their fate. Marney, one of those subs, came closest with a curling free-kick that Friedel gathered easily.
