Match report:<br>Rovers 0-1 Spurs

Posted on 4 December 2004  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Robbie Keane struck at Ewood Park to secure back-to-back league wins and lift us up to 12th in the Barclays Premiership on Saturday night.

The Irish star provided a fitting finish to an amazing 70-yard run from midfielder Michael Brown for what turned out to be the winner in the 56th minute.

It was just the tonic required after the disappointment of going out of the Carling Cup quarter-finals on penalties against Liverpool on Wednesday night and built on last Sunday's 2-0 win against Middlesbrough.

The key to the win was a faultless defensive performance with the central pairing of Ledley King and Noureddine Naybet snuffing out the threat of the two Pauls, Dickov and Gallagher, and Stephen Kelly making a fine return from injury at right-back.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium throughout and Paul Robinson was only forced into one save of any note as he tipped away Gallagher's effort a minute in the second half.

Indeed, Rovers only had one effort on goal in the first half - Andy Todd volleying just wide - whereas we looked the brighter in possession, especially in the final third where Keane, Pedro Mendes, Reto Ziegler and Jermain Defoe worked some nice triangles.

However, all that work only resulted in long shots from Defoe, Keane and Brown with our best chance falling to Defoe just before the whistle, onto Keane's clever reverse pass only for Friedel to deflect the ball onto the roof of the net.

Rovers started better after the interval, Robinson did well to save from Gallagher but we then scored on the break.

Brown deserves all the credit after an amazing 70-yard run that started with him breaking up play just outside our area and somehow shrugging off Tugay as he tried to bring him down. He then cut inside Johansson and across to the left side of the area where he looked up, saw Keane supporting and rolled the perfect pass for the striker to finish with style from 12 yards.

Friedel saved well from Defoe and an expected siege from Rovers never really arrived.

Naybet did superbly to clear from Dickov and David Thompson fired just over but with the arrival of Anthony Gardner further shoring things up at the back, we held on with little fuss.
