The game had everything - great goals, chances, saves, a penalty, controversy and, the only down side, an injury that forced keeper Paul Robinson off in the second half.
Fredi Kanoute struck twice, Ledley King, Andy Reid and Stephen Kelly one each but Reid's was the pick of the bunch - a 30-yarder screamer that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar - and arguably the most important.
We steamed into a 3-0 lead in an eventful first half but were pegged back by a harsh penalty award just before half-time.
Gareth Barry made no mistake from the spot to give Villa a glimmer of hope and they were the better side at the start of the second half. Robinson's injury just after the hour added to our worries at the time but that was all wiped out by Reid's goal on 68 minutes.
Villa were gone after that and it was a case of how many more we would score - as it turned out, one more, via Kelly a minute from time.
Martin Jol made just one change from Highbury with Robbie Keane in for Jermain Defoe and partnering Kanoute up front.
Both keepers were called into action inside the opening two minutes as Robinson got a hand to Davis' one-on-one and Postma made a reaction block to deny King's near post header.
The first controversy came after four minutes when Delaney went down under Edman's challenge - no penalty awarded - and we went straight up the other end to open the scoring. Villa were asking for a foul as Kanoute brushed aside Ridgewell, controlled a long ball and finished off the inside of the post. Still only five minutes gone!
Villa wobbled for a few minutes as Davis then Kanoute fired into the Park Lane end but the second goal wasn't too far away.
It all started when Davies intercepted a pass with Villa on the attack and the Welsh star travelled fully 60 yards down the right before his low cross was scrambled away. Carrick's corner was cleared to Reid who controlled and fired through the bodies onto the foot of the post, the loose ball fell to King who poked home from close range.
Six minutes later and it was 3-0. This time it came via a Postma save from Davis' near post header, Reid took the corner short to Davies, his cross was headed back into his own box by Solano, Keane was upended by a combination of Laursen and Angel but as we looked for a penalty, Kanoute swooped to drill high into the roof of the net.
Villa looked rattled. Laursen almost headed into his own net, Keane volleyed a free-kick just over and Davies fired wide.
A 3-0 lead at half-time would have been perfect but there was more controversy just before the whistle. Dawson dived in to block a fierce Angel strike that struck him on the hands just a matter of yards away. Referee Mark Clattenburgh nevertheless pointed to the spot, leaving Dawson in disbelief. Barry drilled the penalty down the middle and it was 3-1 at the break.
That clearly gave Villa a lift and they were the better side for the first 15 minutes after the break.
Robinson was alert to tip over from Vassell and then brave when the pair met again after 61 minutes - the keeper coming off worst in a 50-50 tackle as Vassell slid in for Solano's pass.
He hobbled around for a few minutes but was soon replaced by Radek Cerny making his debut.
Villa continued to press before Reid's wonder strike after 68 minutes. Dawson broke up play, the ball went through Davies and Davis to Reid just over half-way. He carried the ball for 20 yards before unleashing a drive that flashed home off the underside of the crossbar.
It was all us after that. Defoe and Mido replaced Keane and Kanoute and were hungry to add to the tally - Defoe's effort clipped the top of the crossbar, Davies had another couple of effort before the finale, Davis back-heeled to the overlapping Kelly who controlled and beat Postma at the near post.
