Match report:<br> Mauritius 0, Spurs 2

Posted on 20 May 2005  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Goals from Robbie Keane and Lee Barnard ensured our season finished on a high in Mauritius on Friday.

Irish star Keane tapped home the opening goal after 18 minutes of this friendly at the island’s Anjalay Stadium and it was a lead that was never really threatened.

Barnard then capped an impressive personal campaign in front of goal with a cracking dipping effort just two minutes from time.

Indeed, the strike meant our reserves’ top scorer with 17 goals in 17 games scored the first and last Spurs goals of the 2004-05 campaign — starting in the friendly against Swedish outfit Falkenbergs FF back on July 13 and finishing in Mauritius in May. Now there’s a future quiz question!

Martin Jol started with Johnnie Jackson at left-back, Andy Reid in central midfield, Mark Yeates wide on the left, Dean Marney on the right and Keane and Jermain Defoe up front.

As a gesture, Ray Beeharry and Eric Johnson, who were flown over from England to train with Mauritius, were named on our substitutes bench.

The first half was played a decent pace for a friendly with Mauritius also looking to knock the ball about on a tricky playing surface.

Keane and Defoe fashioned the first chance after 15 minutes with Keane beaten by the bounce from Defoe’s clever flicked pass.

It took a further three minutes for us to take the lead. The goal owed a lot to Yeates’ persistence, robbing keeper Doro after he’d turned inside Keane rather than clearing. Yeates was left with a clear path to goal but rolled it square for his Irish compatriot to tap home.
Andy Reid soon tested Doro again, the keeper parried his free-kick but the angle was too tight for Defoe to tuck away the rebound.

Mauritius continued to plug away with limited success - Appou and Perle both had efforts blocked - while in-between, Kieran McKenna replaced Dean Marney, who had felt his Achilles tighten. McKenna might have scored but prodded Keane’s cross over while at the other end, Edouard fizzed a shot just over.

The second half was quieter as we held on to possession but found the home side a tough nut to crack.

Michael Carrick volleyed over while at the other end, Jeannot shot wide and Appou should really have done better with a header from close range.

Keane ran the show for the next few minutes, almost setting up Yeates, volleying at Doro and then leaving two defenders in a heap before striking the top of the crossbar.

It looked like one goal would be enough before Barnard had the final say. Only on for Defoe minutes earlier, he picked the ball up on the left, cut inside and unleashed a shot into the top corner.
