Two fine Charlton goals accounted for the defeat with Jerome Thomas' thunderbolt into the top corner after four minutes and Danny Murphy's curling free-kick also in off the post five minutes from time.
We actually played well in the first half and created plenty of chances but the second half was a non-event with countless injuries and substitutions in the middle segment of the half completely killing any flow in the game.
Andy Reid came closest to equalising when his free-kick was headed off the line by Shaun Bartlett but it was generally a night to forget.
Martin Jol made four changes from the FA Cup tie at Newcastle on Sunday with Reid, Robbie Keane, Anthony Gardner and Erik Edman back in for Simon Davies, Jermain Defoe, Noureddine Naybet and Thimothee Atouba. Sean Davis was back on bench alongside Defoe and Atouba. Meanwhile, three ex-Spurs all started for Charlton in Chris Perry, Luke Young and Paul Konchesky.
It wasn't the ideal start with Thomas' bolt out of the blue arriving after just four minutes. Nothing looked on when Konchesky rolled the winger the ball 30 yards out but he shifted right of Noe Pamarot and smashed it into the top corner.
We then created the better chances as the first half followed a similar pattern to recent games at Southampton and Newcastle United - first half possession ended 57-43 per cent in our favour.
Reid's crosses from the right supplied two gilt-edged chances for Keane, who headed wide from 10 yards and then Kanoute, who somehow failed to connect from six yards after 14 minutes
Keane and Brown tried their luck from distance and then Keane almost released Kanoute, El Karkouri back to make a crucial tackle.
The home side created just about their only chance of the half when Bartlett released Murphy who had support but elected to try and lob Robinson, the attempt flicked off King and sailed agonisingly just wide.
Keane combined again with Kanoute in the 28th minute, this time a delightful flick from Gardner's pass sent his partner through on Kiely but the keeper spread himself well to block. Reid was there for the rebound but snatched his half-volley wide.
The second half wasn't a patch on the first half and became more and more frustrating, not least for a spell of about eight or nine minutes when, literally, nothing seemed to happen - Thomas took about five minutes in going down injured twice and then being replaced, it was that kind of night.
There were only three chances in the first 35 minutes of the half as Keane drilled low at Kiely after 49, Gardner opted to cross rather than shoot from a poorly cleared Reid free-kick on 59 and then the moment of the half, Reid's goalbound free-kick from 30 yards headed off the line by Bartlett.
We seemed to use about 10 minutes for the home side receiving treatment, substitutions and free-kicks being retaken and suddenly the clock showed 10 minutes left.
The next action came after 83 minutes when Reid's inswinging free-kick missed everyone and landed in Kiely's hands but then the hammer blow from Murphy.
Hreidarsson came in from the left, seemed to be clipped by Pamarot 40 yards out but stumbled further on before finally going down. It was barely a free-kick but that didn't matter to Murphy, who curled home off the inside of the post with Robinson at full stretch.
