FA Premier Reserve League South

Goals from Tim Sherwood and Gary Doherty saw our reserve side to a well deserved 2-0 win over Wimbledon at Kingstonian on Monday evening.

In appalling playing conditions, hardly conducive to free-flowing football, the second string adapted the better and imposed themselves on the home side from the first minute.

It was a lively, high-tempo encounter with Jonathan Blondel sharp and incisive from the off, the team signalled their intent almost straight from kick-off when Doherty powered through and his effort just cleared the crossbar. A Ricketts shot was also just over.

Spurs took the lead on 14 minutes when the returning Matthew Etherington swung in a deep cross that found Sherwood unmarked in the Wimbledon penalty area and his lofted header beat keeper Shane Gore who had advanced off his line.

Sherwood had an opportunity to double his goal tally on the night when his was again found in the area, but Gore did well to block his shot from point-blank range.

Spurs carried on in much the same manner in the second period and Doherty's downward header bounced just over the bar after a determined run by his strike partner Lee Barnard. Barnard himself headed just wide minutes later from a Doherty cross.

Wimbledon went slightly more direct after the break and balls over the top in the direction of striker Wayne Gray began to cause problems with Neil Sullivan having to be alert on several occasions.

The lead was doubled on 69 minutes when Blondel fed Etherington down the left and the wide man beat his marker and slipped the ball through to Doherty who crisply struck into the net.

Blondel and Barnard both went close in the later stages, while Sullivan pulled off a superb reaction save from Wimbledon substitute Ahmet Suleymanoglu.

Team: Sullivan, Henry, Jackson, Ricketts, Gardner, Thelwell, Blondel, Sherwood (Bowditch 61), Barnard, Doherty, Etherington (Galbraith 69). Subs not used: G Kelly, Hughes, Slabber.
