Joe Kinnear, who played over 250 games for us between 1966-75, is now attempting to drag Luton Town back up the divisions. Relegated to the basement last term, the former Wimbledon boss is well on his way if Tuesday night's friendly at Kenilworth Road is anything to go by.
Hatters fought like tigers and displayed no little football either - the combination of the two, plus Kinnear's managerial nous, and a return to Division Two at the first attempt could be on the cards.
The home side had the better of the early chances before Aaron Skelton opened the scoring after 21 minutes. Paul Hughes crossed low and Skelton clipped home a low volley from 10 yards.
Carl Griffiths might have done better with a free header from another Hughes cross before our best chances of the half - only for Carl Emberson to superbly deny Poyet and Etherington.
Substitutions affected the flow of the game in the second half and chances were few and far between. It looked like the home side had done enough but with four minutes left John Piercy's burst into the area was halted by Satani and Sergei Rebrov made no mistake from the spot.

How apt, the evening before Bill Nicholson is honoured by the club, that one of his legendary players should end our 100-per-cent record in pre-season.
