Jermain Defoe and Fredi Kanoute grabbed the goals in the 2-0 victory to end a sequence of six straight losses in the Barclays Premiership.
Both goals arrived in the second half as we took advantage of the visitors going down to 10 men with Franck Queudrue sent off for a two-footed lunge on Noe Pamarot just before half-time.
"The pressure was on, but we are a big club and we need results, we started the season with a lot of new players and maybe the balance isn't right yet, but we are getting there," said Martin.
"We needed the win and I thought we did very well.
"We started off to play well and we then had to find the spare man and we did that and the second goal was also nice to get in our own stadium.
"It's a terrific feeling to have won, although we could easily have scored a few more goals if we'd been a bit cleverer."
Martin Jol was naturally delighted to beat Middlesbrough and end a run of defeats in front of our fans at the Lane on Sunday.
