Head Coach Martin was speaking after the last official engagement of the tour when he presented the Tottenham Hotspur Souvenir Cup and prizes to the owners, trainer and jockey of ‘Fashion Editor’ at the Mauritius Turf Club on Sunday.
The remaining players and staff all attended the race meeting before the second group departed for England on Monday.
The brief but busy tour included a packed promotional press conference, a visit to Rose Belle School, an open training session, Frank Arnesen scouting an Under-17 tournament, dinner at the High Commission, a match and win against Mauritius and the horse racing.
But it was the trip to the school that will linger in the memory for longest.
“It was such a nice week,” said Martin. “We went to the school, saw the children and they loved us and we loved being there. It was amazing to see the kids with their smiling faces.
“I think we pleased a lot of people. We played a game on a very difficult pitch against Mauritius and I think we did well. The atmosphere was great.
“We’ve done things with the Mauritian people, visited the High Commissioner and overall it was a great week for us.
“It was all about promoting football here and our club and we did that.
“There are a lot of Liverpool supporters here, Manchester United as well, but half of them are Tottenham Hotspur fans. It is so amazing when you experience that and see that Tottenham Hotspur is such a big name all over the world.”
Martin Jol has hailed our tour to Mauritius a great success.
