Clive Allen was particularly happy with the performance in central midfield of Dean Marney in Monday's reserve win over Norwich.
Back from an Achilles injury, the athletic midfielder was stationed in his favoured Academy position in the centre after playing most of his reserve football in a wide right role.
The step back in time certainly appeared a switch worth making as Deano was at the hub of virtually all of our attacking sorties and Clive says it was this sort of involvement he was seeking for the 20-year-old, who gained first team experience at the beginning of last season and made a start away at Manchester United in March.
"I spoke to him about it before the game and he asked why he was playing in that position," reported the Development Coach. "We looked at the roles he has had - full-back, wide on the right - and we just felt he would be involved in the game a lot more.
"I thought he was influential - obviously with the first goal - and had a couple of fantastic efforts himself when he powered forward. He has got a great engine and he created opportunities for himself with real determination.
"You've seen what Dean Marney is all about, he can pass the ball well and I feel he is good in this position.
"He was excited about that and it was an energetic performance - one that people will be impressed with."
