Gary Mabbutt has nothing but fond memories of Jurgen Klinsmann's time at White Hart Lane.
Jurgen is back for the first time in almost five years next Thursday, October 17, for the Tottenham Tribute Match against DC United, where he will line-up alongside fellow Spurs heroes Glenn Hoddle and Chris Waddle.
Legend Gary rates the German star as one of the best in his 16 years at the Lane.
Still firm friends, Gary recalled those golden days. "The season he came we also brought in Gica Popescu, Dumitrescu, Nicky Barmby - the famous five - but Jurgen was an amazing signing at that particular time.
"When he first arrived people were very excited but some people thought he was maybe coming to the latter stages of his career, even when he first came.
"There was also all the furore about his diving or whatever, a lot was made of that by the media when he came over, but within the first couple of weeks he won everyone over in the country with the way he performed on the field, on the training ground and the example he set.
"When he arrived he was one of the superstars of the world game and coming into Tottenham, eyebrows were raised and people were ready to see any faults, but I don't think they could find any at all."
Gary admits the only disappointment was failing to cap that first spell with a trophy.
"Jurgen was great for us in that first season. The team, while there could have been better times, I'm mainly talking about the semi-final of the FA Cup, we had some wonderful games as well.
"It was disappointing we didn't achieve anything that season. The season after he left us and then came back a few years later.
"He came with a lot of doubters but within a few weeks he turned everyone around. Whether you were a Spurs supporter or Liverpool supporter, to see him perform the way he did, with the quality he had, and his all-round demeanour while he was here, was special for everyone."
TICKETS are currently on sale from the Spurs Ticketline on 08700 112222 or online for members and season ticket holders. Child and OAP entry is just £5, with Adults £15/20.
