The ex-Tottenham player and manager was confirmed as the new Leeds United boss by the Elland Road outfit this morning.
Gary was Venables' skipper when we lifted the FA Cup in 1991 and the legendary Lane defender believes the chance to compete for titles and Champions League football will drive him.
"I'm sure Terry still wants to prove himself as a manager who can win championships," said Gary.
"He won the FA Cup with us at Tottenham but that's really all he's acheived in his time in English football. I'm sure he wants to build on that and what an opportunity he has at Leeds.
"He is a very good manager, he's very popular with players and certainly his man-management skills and tactical awareness are second to none.
"What he wants to achieve, I'm sure, is to get Champions League football, maintain that and push for the championship. He's got some great players there and Terry is one of the best players to go into that job.
"I feel sure, whatever Leeds are looking for, Terry will do his best to provide it."
Gary Mabbutt feels Terry Venables still wants to prove himself in English club football.
