Gary Mabbutt describes the start of the World Cup as 'phenomenal'.
Our legendary former captain and third on our all-time appearance list, 'Mabbsy' has been heavily involved in South Africa since 2002 in his role as ambassador.
So it was no surprise that he shared in the country's emotion when Bafana Bafana and Mexico stepped out for the tournament's opening match in Soccer City, Johannesburg, on Friday.
"I was at the opening ceremony and it was a huge event," said Gary.
"On the day, I felt very proud of what has been achieved over the last eight years.
"The atmosphere at Soccer City, the occasion and the match itself with South Africa playing so well all added up to a fantastic day.
"All the supporters have been mixing together, laughing, having pictures together, it's been a great atmosphere at every game.
"It's all about smiles on faces and everything is positive.
"For me personally, I'd been pushing this World Cup for the last eight years in my role as ambassador. There has been a lot of negativity along the way but hopefully now everyone can sit back and enjoy a great World Cup.
"There were a lot of doubters but South Africa always promised to deliver the biggest carnival of football the world has ever seen and so far, that's the feedback we're getting from all around the world."
