Luka Modric was a picture of disappointment after the defeat at Chelsea and insisted: “We didn’t deserve that.”
The Croatian playmaker pulled the strings in central midfield alongside Sandro in the first half at Stamford Bridge.
We looked in the driving seat after Sandro’s thunderbolt into the top corner from 30 yards handed us 1-0 lead in the 19th minute.
Chelsea had forced Heurelho Gomes into a couple of fine saves in that opening period but we looked well positioned as the first half ticked into the 45th minute – but we all know what happened after that.
Gomes lost control of Frank Lampard’s shot but appeared to claw it back before the whole of the ball had crossed the line, only for it to be awarded as a goal.
Bouyed by that, Chelsea pushed us back in the second and eventually broke through in the 89th minute with another controversial goal as Solomon Kalou looked offside when he poked home from Didier Drogba’s scuffed shot.
The 2-1 defeat hit the players hard – summed-up by Luka.
“I don’t think we deserved to lose the game,” he said. “When you look at the whole game, especially the first half, we were the much better team.
“The first goal really hurt us. It’s not a goal. The second goal is offside as well. It’s so disappointing to lose that way.
“If we were still 1-0 up (at half-time) we would have approached the second half differently. But what can we do?
“All we can do is pick ourselves up and try to win the next match, that’s it.”
