The midfielder was forced off with the injury against Fulham and missed the defeat to West Ham last time out.
He feels that the break from then to the Liverpool game has worked in his favour, if not the team's.
"It's alright - much better," he smiled. "Sometimes, because of the gap inbetween games you don't know when to start training and be really strong. You don't take risks because you know you still have a while until the next game.
"It is good for me to have the time, but I know for the boys it is better to be playing each weekend."
Gus admits that the fragmented nature of this chunk of the season is proving something of a frustration.
"Bad, for us - really bad. It is difficult because in December we played every three days and now we keep having breaks. It can be a mental problem because you have to switch on and off.
"The first one was nice, but now it is too long. In two weeks we have another one. It's strange, but it is our fault because we lost the cup game."
Gus Poyet says his ankle injury is 'much better' and is back in training to prepare for the Liverpool game on Sunday.
