Our on-loan midfielder Grant Ward bagged his first goal for Chicago Fire in the MLS side’s 2-1 win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds in a weather-affected US Open Cup tie overnight (Wednesday evening, Thursday morning UK time).

Grant, who has started Fire’s last three MLS fixtures, was once again named in the home side’s XI – the versatile youngster seizing the chance to open his goalscoring account in the 22nd minute to put Fire in front.

Mike Magee then made it 2-0 in a match that started nearly two hours late due to thunderstorms in the Bridgeview area of Illinois.

Pittsburgh pulled a goal back shortly before the break but, after the thunder and lightning returned, the match was ended in the 49th minute with Fire awarded the victory. They’ll host Columbus Crew in the fifth round next week.
