Glenn Hoddle says there is light at the end of the injury tunnel - although only Christian Ziege from last week's 13 absentees is in the frame to face Middlesbrough.
The good news is that Steffen Freund, Gus Poyet and Steve Carr have stepped up training, Mauricio Taricco has returned to light work and Darren Anderton, who only recently stepped out of a knee brace, has started running again.
But the boss will still be without Freund, Poyet, Carr, Taricco, Anderton, Chris Perry, Antony Gardner, Ledley King, Tim Sherwood, Steve Clemence, Alton Thelwell and Neil Sullivan for the visit of Boro.
Speaking at Thursday's press conference, Glenn reported: "From last week, Christian Ziege might have a chance for the weekend but there is a better news in that players are starting their recoveries.
"Gus Poyet has had a week's training, Taricco has had some training but it's been low-key at the moment, we'll look to step that up next week.
"Stephen Carr has started to train reasonably well for the first time today in the group and Darren has started a little running.
"Steffen Freund has had a reserve game and come through okay as well, so there is a little light there.
"We're two or three weeks off, maybe, getting the squad bolstered up. Anthony, Ledley and Tim Sherwood are behind that. It's a mixed bag."
