Les: I'm raring to go

Les Ferdinand is on course for something of a rarity since checking in at Spurs in July 1997 - being fully fit for pre-season training. Signed after two memorable seasons at Newcastle, the former England international's spell at the Lane has been wrecked by injuries.

Last season was arguably his lowest point. Laid low by an Achilles injury that required surgery, Ferdinand's comeback after an arduous rehabilitation programme lasted only three games before the same problem struck again.

More surgery followed in April and he was back on his feet at the end of the season and, after working hard throughout the summer, our powerful striker hopes to be in tip-top condition for the new campaign.

"When I came back from the first operation I was running but still in quite a bit of pain," revealed Ferdinand. "I just thought that was down to stiffness from the surgery but it worked out that there was still a problem.

"The surgeon's gone back in, removed a cyst and a few other blockages. I've started running again and had none of the symptoms that I was having before.

"The rehabilitation is going well. It all feels fine and I'm pushing on with the training. Come pre-season I'll already be fit and then I'll have another month of pre-season training and should be, barring any more troubles, raring to go for the start of the season.

"In the past the problem has got me down and when I thought there was a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel perhaps I tended to snatch at that light too quickly.

"The one plus-point this time is that I don't have to rush back. I can take my rehabilitation during the summer and use that time to get fit again."
