The striker has been laid low after suffering another crack on the head and concussion against Middlesbrough on December 23.
He missed out on the forgettable trips to Southampton and Ipswich Town but has now been given the all clear to play again.
“I’ve been given the okay to play,” Ferdinand revealed. “And I want to play in this game. Not just because it is Newcastle but because I am desperate to play again.
“I thought my form before this bang on the head was good and I want to get out there again.”
The 33-year-old joked that regarding his head knocks this season, the surgery had been like ‘a revolving door’.
He added: “I got a kick against Arsenal but I was told that I could go as I felt with regards to the Middlesbrough game. I played in that and got a kick in exactly the same spot. I felt a bit ill so it was another night in hospital.”
Ferdinand said everyone felt the disappointment of our defeat at Ipswich. “It doesn’t just affect the players out there,” he said. “Everyone was gutted and we still can’t put our finger on why our away form is so poor.
“But we have to be positive. Newcastle are next, they are in a bit of form after good results against Leeds and Manchester United and will be on a high but our home form has been excellent and we have try to maintain it.”
