Leo roars in joy and pain

Posted on 22 October 2000  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Oyvind Leonhardsen didn’t know whether to laugh or cry on Saturday night.

The Norwegian went from hero to zero after inspiring us to a vital Premiership win against struggling Derby County at the Lane.

‘Leo’ started the ball rolling in the third minute with a delicious curler from 30 yards to open the scoring in the 3-1 win.

The midfielder then missed a one-on-one chance, scored a second from close range in the second half and volleyed a hat-trick chance into the side netting before disaster struck.

With 69 minutes on the clock he picked up the ball on the edge of our area but just as he attempted to break away on a counter attack, he collapsed in a heap. The diagnosis was immediately a hamstring problem and he was stretched off to a standing ovation.

Leonhardsen underwent treatment straight away but frustratingly did not know the full extent of the problem when he left the ground. The likelihood is that it will be at least a month on the sidelines.

“I was very pleased to score and to win was very important but unfortunately I got injured,” he reflected. “I pulled my hamstring so I’ll probably be out for a while.

“It’s very difficult to say what the extent of the injury is. I will probably have a better look on Sunday and Monday and maybe it will be easier to say what will happen then.”

So was he happy or sad? “A bit of both,” he admitted. “Happy to win but very disappointed to get this injury. I think I will be out for a while.”
