Ledley King has stated his determination to ensure the team enjoy a strong finish to the season as the campaign enters the final stages.
In racing terms we are now going into the final furlongs, among the pack chasing the leaders and Ledley knows that the teams who establish a run of form between now and last day stand a good chance of a top six Premiership finish.
"I think there is a good few teams that are striving to get into the top six or seven places," reasoned the captain. "Obviously I have been here a while and know it is difficult, it is about whatever team can put together some consistency and go on a run. That team will stand a great chance of doing it. We are just trying to make sure it is us.
"You have got to show a strong mental attitude. You have to give it everything, you can't hope to get there, you've got to go out, do your job and pick up the points to get there. You can't hope to sneak into a high position, you know it won't happen - you have to show desire and a real will to get the points."
Ledley has been in a similar position before, in season 2001-02 Glenn Hoddle's side were fairly well positioned going into the last batch of games after a promising campaign, but ended up in 9th after recording two wins in the last seven.
"There are a lot of players here for who it will be a new experience," he added. "Me, having been here a while and had a few disappointing ends to seasons, and I am determined to make sure it doesn't happen this season.
"I will try and help as much as I can, but it is down to us as a team out on the pitch to show the desire. You can talk as much as you like, but it is out there on the pitch that we need to do it.
"We want to finish as high as possible and that is what we are aiming for."
