Last time we met...

Posted on 8 August 2003  - 12:00

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Legendary Spurs boss Keith Burkinshaw features heavily in when you talk about Spurs and Sporting Lisbon.

A success here between 1976-84, with two FA Cups and a UEFA Cup to his name, Burkinshaw also managed the Portugese club in 1986-87.

And he was in charge of Spurs in our only ever meeting with Sporting Lisbon back in December 1981.

A side that also included current boss Glenn Hoddle and first team coach Chris Hughton flew out of snowbound England to take on worthy opponents before a crucial FA Cup tie against Arsenal.

We went 2-0 up via Ricky Villa and Graham Roberts, defender Roberts then headed into his own net before the home side levelled via Manuel Fernandes.

Fernandes later bagged the winner for a Lisbon side, managed by Malcolm Allison, that went on to clinch the domestic double.

Spurs line-up that night: Clemence, Hughton, Price, Roberts, Villa, Perryman, Ardiles (Hazard), Falco, Galvin, Hoddle, Crooks.
