Ossie Ardiles picked up the English language quickly enough after his arrival from Argentina in 1978. But hotspur magazine discovers that he also picked up a different ‘dialect' in those early days at the Lane!
The problem was that renowned prankster Peter Taylor, also featured separately in the latest issue, shared a room with Ossie and Ricky Villa on a trip to Holland.
And as Ossie reveals: "In 24 hours we knew every swear word in the English language!"
Ossie is featured in a round table discussion with Steve Perryman and Glenn Hoddle as they look back on their time together with Spurs. And not surprisingly the talk quickly turns to the 1981 FA Cup Final, Chas & Dave...and Ricky's great goal.
Yet Perryman reveals that the big bearded one would not have played in the replay if he had got his way !
Steve takes up the story: "Keith Burkinshaw came up to me after the first Final and said: ‘Would you play Ricky second game?' I said no...because of the way he'd walked head down around the track after being substituted and hadn't watched the rest of the game.
"It wasn't very ‘team' and I was all about the team. But Keith said: ‘I'm telling you now, he's playing.'" And he did!
What a great read as Hoddle also tells us what it was like to suddenly find himself in a midfield with like-minded players possessing the skills to match his own.
