In the end it needed a late equaliser from Lee Barnard to secure a 1-1 draw in the heat at Fleet Town's Calthorpe Park.
Fleet had earlier forged ahead via the penalty spot after 28 minutes.
"It was just what you expect in pre-season," said Clive. "The conditions were very difficult and it was very hot but I was delighted with the way we went about it.
"We'd trained hard all week but you cannot replicate the competitive situations you find in matches in training. That's why the friendlies are so important at this stage and you want things done right.
"We controlled the game for long periods especially in the second half and finally Barney popped up late with an equaliser. It was a good work out for us and I was very pleased with the lads."
