After a day’s travelling, the first of two training sessions is at 10am local time (6pm, UK) this morning (July 22).
The players have spoken positively about the tour from the outset, with friendly matches to follow against LA Galaxy on Tuesday (7.30pm local, 3.30am UK, July 25), Liverpoore in Baltimore on Saturday (1pm local, 6pm UK) and finally New York Red Bulls on July 31 (7.05pm local, 12.05am, UK, August 1).
“The lads went there a two years ago and it was a good trip,” said Michael Dawson, who completed his return from injury with 45 minutes in our first friendly at Stevenage on Wednesday.
“We’ve three really good matches, LA Galaxy, Liverpool – that will be a bit different as a pre-season friendly – and then New York Red Bulls. Good games, hot weather and hard graft.”
Younes Kaboul added: “All the conditions will be geared to us having a good training camp and preparation, playing against big teams in LA, Liverpool and New York.
“I’m looking forward to going out there and meeting all the Spurs fans out there as well.”
Jermain Defoe returned to pre-season training last week after taking a later break following the European Championships.
“Speaking to the lads, everyone is looking forward to America,” he said. “Everyone is looking sharp, we’ve a new manager, everyone’s excited, we all start fresh and everyone is looking forward to the challenge.”
The tour provides the perfect opportunity for new signings Jan Vertonghen and Gylfi Sigurdsson to get to know the lads even better.
Gylfi said: “It will be fantastic. I’m with the squad 24/7, not just three hours and then another session in the afternoon, we’re together the whole time, so I’ll get to the chance to chat to them and get to know them all.”
