Already with 56 games already under our belt, we entered the final week with three matches in six days as we aimed for fifth place and a UEFA Cup berth for the second-successive season.
First up was a win at Charlton on Monday May 7, a tough draw followed against Blackburn last Thursday and we achieved our goal with victory over Manchester City at the Lane on Sunday.
It meant we finished the season with a run of eight wins, three draws and just one defeat (at Chelsea) from our last 12 matches.
“The last week hasn’t seen our best performances but we always knew we could score goals with the quality we’ve got in the side,” said Chris. “We’ve managed to win the games we needed to not just to qualify for Europe, but to also finish fifth.
“That says a lot about the character, resilience, determination and will to win in this team and the desire to finish as high as we could.
“Irrespective of the cup competitions, to finish fifth speaks volumes for our group of lads. Everyone knows how difficult it will be to dislodge any of the top four because of their experience in the last few years and the Champions League football they’ve played.
“For us to be knocking on the door again is a great achievement and to do it with the season we’ve had, including the amount of games we’ve had, I’ve no doubts we’ll be better for it.”
