Our Under-19s fought back from a two-goal deficit to secure a 2-2 draw against FC Basel in our opening fixture of the all-new NextGen Series in Switzerland on Wednesday night.
The lads found themselves 2-0 down inside 10 minutes as Basel netted in the sixth and eighth minutes of this Group Four encounter at the Rankhof Stadium, Basel.
Tim Sherwood’s team found a way back into the game in the 16th minute when Kevin Stewart was bundled over in the penalty area.
The referee pointed to the spot and Harry Kane duly converted to make the score 2-1.
The lads grew in confidence following the penalty and controlled the remainder of the first half in extremely warm conditions. Ronnie Hawkins came closest to finding an equaliser with a curling left-foot effort from 20 yards that went narrowly wide.
Shaquile Coulthirst replaced Hawkins at half-time and was in the thick of the action within three minutes of his introduction.
Alex Pritchard crossed from the left and Coulthirst guided his header into the top corner to level the scores at 2-2.
Kane and Souleymane Coulibaly forced fine saves from Bjekovic in the FC Basel goal but the complete turn around was not to be as it remained 2-2 at full-time.
Next up is the visit of Internazionale on Wednesday, August 31, with the fixture to be played at Leyton Orient FC.
