Spurs Ladies put five past Chelmsford City Ladies in the First Round Proper of the women’s FA Cup on Sunday.
The girls got off to a good start with a well taken goal from Eleni Savva inside 10 minutes which settled them down after a frantic start. Savva then doubled her tally on 34 minutes.
Chelmsford continued pressing and were awarded a penalty with five minutes of the first half remaining. But Spurs goalkeeper Ebony Cabey-Gooden followed in the footsteps of male counterpart Heurelho Gomes, making an excellent reaction save whilst diving one way and saving with the other hand.
Spurs came on strong again in the final 20 minutes when Kirsten Thomson was in the right place at the right time to claim her first goal of the game before notching her second with 10 minutes to go.
Player of the Match Savva then went on to claim her first Spurs Ladies hat-trick when she twisted and turned inside the Chelmsford box to then open her body up to hit a well placed shot into the top corner.
Manager Karen Hills said after the game: “We’re happy to be in the next round, although the performance wasn’t one of the best this season.
“At the moment we have a few long-term injuries and also had to make a few other changes on the morning of the game due to illness.
“A few girls had to play in positions that they’re not used to so, on a positive note, the team rallied together and we got the result at the end of the day. We are now looking forward to seeing who our opposition will be in the next round.”
