Now, four months on, King is not only preparing to do battle with Cole in midfield at Upton Park but he’s being talked of in the same breath as the Hammers’ young prodigy in some quarters.
It should be one of the most intriguing contests of the season as King, 20, faces the West Ham trio of Frank Lampard (22), Cole (19) and Michael Carrick (19).
"It should be interesting," said King. "I’ve known Joe for a few years now, he’s a great talent and I’m looking forward to playing against him.
"His strengths are his running with the ball, his dribbling and his change of direction is brilliant.
"But I’ll be looking out for him and hopefully I’ll be able to show him some of my own tricks.
"Michael Carrick is another young lad in there, and with Frank Lampard, who is only 22, they have three midfielders who could well be in the England frame.
"They got a great result on Sunday so they will be on a high but we’re confident and we’ll be looking to do a job over there.
"Hopefully we can build on our three clean sheets and then try to score some goals."

Back in September Ledley King, still battling back from his broken foot, happily discussed with us the virtues of Joe Cole before our home match against West Ham.
