The pair performed admirably in central defence as Ledley made a goalscoring first start for England in last month's 1-1 draw against Portugal.
Ledley, 23, couldn't praise Southgate - 10 years his senior - enough after that friendly in Faro.
They will now face each other as we travel to Middlesbrough in the Premiership on Tuesday.
"I've a lot of admiration for Gareth," said Ledley of the Boro skipper. "He helped me tremendously in my first start for England.
"I look up to players like that and as I get older I'd like to follow in his footsteps in how he's a leader out on the park.
"He has experience, leadership qualities and it's not easy for two players to come and play together at the back in an international.
"He helped me through it, encouraged me, talked to me and generally made me feel good about myself. That helped me with my game."
Ledley King says he would love to follow in Gareth Southgate's footsteps.
