King for a week - delight for Dier

Posted on 13 October 2015  - 14:45

The penultimate part of our mini-series with Ledley King sees our legendary former skipper talking about a player who has caught his eye this season and is set to play for England Under-21s this evening – Eric Dier.

Ledley celebrates a goal at Charlton with Robbie Keane, Johnnie Jackson and Jermain Defoe - February, 2004Eric up against Yaya Toure

Eric enjoyed a fine first season last term where he performed admirably in as both centre-back and full-back on his way to 36 appearances in all competitions, including 25 starts in the Premier League.

But he’s stepped up again this season. Deployed in the holding midfield role by Mauricio Pochettino from the start of pre-season, Eric has been nothing short of a revelation, starting all 11 games so far and bagging two goals, his equaliser against City the highlight and the goal that sparked our 4-1 victory.

Ledley sees similarities between his own game and Eric’s, not least because Ledley was a regular in midfield before eventually becoming a world-class central defender.

“I’ve been really impressed with Eric,” said Ledley. “I first saw him in the midfield role in pre-season, I must admit I was a little surprised to see him there at the time but quickly realised that he can play in there.

“I like him in there and the manager clearly saw him as someone who could play that role and he’s been proved right.

“His performances have been excellent. I do see similar characteristics of myself, he can play, he’s scoring goals - probably more than me already!

“Playing in midfield will improve him as a player if he goes back into defence longer term but at the moment he’s doing such a good job that you’d keep him in there. I’m sure he’s really enjoying it.”
